The New Jersey Devils are on the hunt for a new goaltending coach, and with Dave Rogalski's departure, the search is on to find the right fit for the team's netminding needs. The Devils' General Manager, Sunny Mehta, is tasked with replacing not only Rogalski but also Sergei Brylin, who will no longer be in a coaching role. With Sheldon Keefe remaining as the head coach, the focus shifts to finding the perfect candidate to mentor and develop the team's goaltenders.
One name that immediately comes to mind is Leo Luongo, the younger brother of Hall-of-Fame goaltender Roberto Luongo. Leo has already made a significant impact in the NHL, serving as the goaltending development coach for the Florida Panthers and later becoming the Director of Player Development. Currently, he holds the position of Director of Goaltending for the Charlotte Checkers, Florida's AHL affiliate. His work in developing netminders like Chris Dreiger and Joey Daccord has been instrumental in Florida's success, including two Stanley Cup wins.
Luongo's expertise in streamlining the structure between the NHL and AHL teams could be a game-changer for the Devils. By implementing a similar system, the Devils could potentially develop their own Goaltending Excellence Department, putting an end to the revolving door of underperforming goaltenders. This approach could be a long-term solution, ensuring a steady pipeline of talented netminders.
Another intriguing option is Hannu Toivonen, a former pro goaltender turned goalie coach. Toivonen's success in developing Ilya Samsonov back to NHL standards and mentoring Dennis Hildeby early in his career has earned him the title of 'goaltending guru' at the Toronto Marlies. Toivonen's ability to help Samsonov regain his form and stabilize the Maple Leafs' crease is a testament to his skill. With Artur Akhtyamov showing promise as the Marlies' starting goaltender, Toivonen's expertise could be invaluable in guiding the next generation of Devils' netminders.
However, Curtis Sanford, the current goaltending coach in Toronto, might also be an option. Sanford's familiarity with Keefe and his experience in the NHL could make him an attractive prospect for the Devils. While his recent results may not be outstanding, it's worth noting that he has managed to squeeze solid performances out of goaltenders like Martin Jones and Joseph Woll. The potential for a familiar face to join the Devils' coaching staff cannot be overlooked.
In my opinion, the Devils should strongly consider Leo Luongo for the goaltending coach position. His proven track record in developing top-tier goaltenders and his ability to streamline development between the NHL and AHL teams could be a transformative addition to the organization. While Hannu Toivonen and Curtis Sanford are also viable options, Luongo's expertise and experience make him a strong contender to lead the Devils' goaltending development and potentially end the team's struggles with underperforming netminders.
